While Summer in Richmond got off to a rocky start, with constant rainy weather, the heat kicked in soon after. With many weeks having with temperatures ranging from the high 80s to the low 100s. With the sun beating down across Richmond, our team sprung into action bring some much-needed heat relief to the streets.
How We Got Started
After experiencing the troubling heat that the end of June brought, our founder, Tyrone Nelson, had the idea to provide for those who may not be able to escape the heat. Putting together a plan and collecting resources in just a few days, we quickly sprang into action alongside Clovia Lawrence to distribute our care packages and ice-cold water.
Partnership
Clovia Lawrence, also known as Community Clo, is no stranger to providing resources for our community. As one of the most popular radio hosts in Richmond, she spends her time uplifting various initiatives from her own nonprofit, Project Give Back To Community, to local campaigns such as our own.
Clovia stands as a well-known figure across Richmond, recognized for her award-winning media personality, to her on-the-ground work in the community. Her help in this initiative expanded past distributing care packages, as she also highlighted our work on air.
The Impact
We broke into teams, covering as much ground as possible. We visited Shockoe Bottom, Highland Springs, Grace Street, Bryan Park, Monroe Park, Jackson Ward, and more. We were able to distribute over 50 care packages filled with cooling towels, hand fans, sunscreen, bathing wipes, granola bars, and electrolyte packets. Alongside these care packages, we provided as much ice-cold water as they could carry. We were also able to donate our extra supplies, including water and deodorant to the Salvation Army so they can also provide for those in need.
Reflecting on Our Mission
This initiative exemplifies our mission to provide for our community in any way possible. We pride ourselves on being able to spring into action wherever necessary, finding the most overlooked areas and community members to provide for. We are beyond grateful to have the resources and connections to share with our community, and we look forward to furthering our mission with our next initiative.
